Are You Ready for some ShOOnanigans? Wes Smith hits San Francisco this week!

Cosmic chaps and sonic mutton chops are on the menu for this course of Wes Smith’s Magic Fugu odyssey.

If you have been following the fugu, I did a piece a few weeks ago with DJ Deckard of the Space Cowboys, a San Francisco based Burner music and art collective. Wes had just dropped his dopeness for the Space Cowboy’s RipeCast and was on his way to Santa Monica and Miami. I got to catch up with the illustrious Jenny Shu (aka DJ ShOOey) also of the Space Cowboys, to talk about Wes’s return to Cali this weekend  in San Fransisco.

ShOOnanigans

Tell me about ShOOnanigans –

When I was envisioning what the party was going to look like, my whole inspiration was to bring together all the DJS that I love in the San Fransisco area. Usually parties in the area don’t have headliners – they are made up of Burning Man collectives and camps so there isn’t a lot of segregation.

Space Cowboys had two night shows this year, Halloween and New Years Eve. I wanted to do something for my birthday and ShOONanigans was a really good opportunity to bring people together before we all get out to the playa. Since we haven’t had a show since New Years in a club setting it will draw a large crowd. There will be Space Cowboys working the door and volunteering to help put it all together from top to bottom. We put in a lot of work to throw our shows and people really rally and get things done. Essentially everyone is coming together and doing what we do so well together.

This one has a headliner – what made you decide to buck the norm?

I have been following Wes’s music as a fan for a while now. When he contacted Space Cowboys about doing the RipeCast, I took the opportunity to talk to him and see if he would be interested to play a show for my birthday. He’s a really nice guy and we were able to easily build a rapport together. I personally incorporate a lot of Wes’s tunes into my sets and I wanted him to be a part of the show.  I’m really excited for the opportunity to bring all of these people together and have a great time.

You were just on my coast a few weeks ago for PEX, a regional burn in Maryland. Tell me about how the other side gets down:

The Space Cowboys collaborated a pool stage with the Vitamin B crew from NYC. We had QDup play and everyone was very welcoming. The Vitamin B crew is a great bunch, it was so much fun.

What I didn’t realize was that the East Coast had so many burn events. I think we just immerse ourselves in the culture here and it’s just second nature to us to end at Burning Man. It puts it in perspective that not everyone can get all the way to Black Rock City, so they put their blood sweat and tears into the regional events. I think it is great, it was a wonderful experience and on a much smaller scale which is nice, almost like how Burning Man was years ago.

Thanks, Jenny. I look forward to meeting you on the playa this year and wish you the happiest of birthdays! Until then we will be rockin’ out to your RipeCast.

ShOONanigans will feature 3 stages including a silent disco. A portion of the proceeds will go towards Flux Foundation for their art project at Burning Man this year.

It’s Wes Smith Yo! w/Vitamin B Crew, New York City

Agent 137 is on a spy mission following Wes Smith around the world for the Magic Fugu tour.  Her mission is to gather musical intelligence on the crews that make the record go round, so peep this and more upcoming briefings in this space.

Next stop is NYC so today we interviewed John (Tektite) and Tim (the Enchanter) of Vitamin B in the middle of a photo shoot for the album cover of Tim’s new single.

Vitamin B… What’s in the name?
Vitamin B is almost in their 7th year of promoting a monthly 1st Friday breakbeat show in NYC. Made up of purveyors of the broken beat : Tektite (founder), Tim the Enchanter, Illexxandra & Shisaa. There was a need in NYC for breakbeats in an unpretentious space to offer drinks at a decent NY drink price and a ticket price that would allow them to break even (but also throw a great party). They started an underground movement that has grown over the years to bigger (and legal) spaces, but kept the same grit and authenticity of the original movement.

Why the B?
There was an element missing in Brooklyn so they felt Vitamin B was the right element to infuse. What the B stands for is a sealed and top secret only for them to know.

What are you bringing to NYC with these shows? Do you see the rerising of breakbeats?
Breakbeats are the alternative to the 4X4 – they are bringing it all to the table but breaks spans such wide variety of different subgenres though juke, bounce, 2step, jersey club, drum&bass, etc and they always give the show a different feel from the 4X4 NY scene. Some of the newer up and coming producers like Mafia Kiss, Tony Quattro and Wuki don’t necessarily identify as breakbeat artists so the newer generation is getting turned on to it more and more. The lines get more blurred and everyone is there for good music.

What’s up next after this week’s show for Vitamin B?
DJ ICEY! July 10th – One of Tim the Enchanter’s Miami Music Conference favorite moments was getting down to Icey at Future Sound of Breaks ( I actually ran into him during Icey and the smile was grand). He said listening to Icey come out with fresh rerubs and watching the whole room get down was refreshing and one of his favorite WMC moments.

The photoshoot – what’s it about?
Tim is coming out with a new single “BAD BITCH “on Martin Flex’s label “Let’s Go” soon, very very soon (It’s the hotness).

Let’s talk about Friday – ARE YOU EXCITED?

Yes! The Freestylers! Wes Smith! From buying Freestylers records back in the early 90’s to where they are now, John is truly so damn excited to see em for the first time ever. They talked about Wes Smith and how he is an absolute pioneer of the era and they can’t WAIT for him to bring the funk.

Can I get an Amen?
The Amen Tee! A friend of theirs developed the design and actually did a “shirt off your back” silk screening at a show, but now you can get them online. Screw Capitalism! Unless you are buying this shirt.

Catch the Vitamin B crew this Friday with The Freestylers and Wes Smith and special guest DJ Quesquecest?
